Shortly, Hardeen was replaced by Bess Rahner, the woman who became Houdini's partner both in the act and in his life. When Hayman became bored, Houdini's brother Theodore (later known as Hardeen) became his partner. The team's specialty was the Crate Escape. (The name "Houdini" was used in tribute to Jean Eugene Robert-Houdin, the most famous magician of the era). He teamed up with Jack Hayman, a fellow magic enthusiast, to form the Houdini Brothers. In reality, he turned to magic at age 17 as an alternative to factory work. He did not, as legend has it, run away with a circus, nor was he an apprentice to a locksmith. Lynn, a traveling magician, perform the Linking Rings trick. Houdini became fascinated with magic as a young boy after seeing Dr. Houdini's motto? "And this, too, shall pass". Most likely this caused sterilization Houdini had no children.Īccording to an autobiographical pamphlet published by the magician in 1920, Houdini said that his favorite place was Hollywood, California and that his favorite song was Auld Lang Syne (the traditional New Year's Eve tune). Houdini allowed his brother Leopold, New York's first X-ray specialist, to X-ray him frequently. He was, however, extremely athletic and highly motivated to succeed. Like many people in his day (especially those from immigrant families), Houdini was poorly educated. Houdini was small, standing a mere 5'5", with dark, wavy hair, dark gray eyes and a high-pitched voice. Bess, who passed away aboard a passenger train traveling cross-country between Los Angeles and New York, instead is buried in the Gate of Heaven Cemetery (Hawthorne, NY), near Babe Ruth, Jimmy Cagney, Sal Mineo and Dutch Schultz. This choice would have consequences after Houdini's death: though he stipulated in his will that he wanted Bess buried beside him, the Machpelah cemetery would not allow the interment of someone outside the Jewish faith. (Houdini was so angry with Sadie that he specified in his will, "No part either of the principal or income of my estate shall ever directly or indirectly go to SADIE GLANTZ WEISS!") Houdini himself caused friction in his Jewish family when he married Bess (Wilhelmina Rahner), who was Catholic. Consequently, permanent animosity arose when brother Nathan's wife Sadie divorced him and, within two weeks, married brother Leopold. Not only was Houdini's childhood spent in poverty, but the individual family members seemed often to be at odds with each other. Houdini's family had its share of conflicts. Though a lot has been written about Houdini's devotion to his mother, it is clear that he was also close to, and proud of, his father, as can be seen the notes he wrote in the family bible. Samuel Weiss was a rabbi who died in 1892 of cancer, before his son's magical career got started. Heading the family were Mayer Samuel (1829-1892) and Cecilia (1841-1913), Houdini's mother and father. Herman was really Houdini's half brother, from Rev. (1879-1962) and one sister, Gladys Carrie (born 1882 - unknown year of death). He was four years old when his family moved to America, sailing into New York on Jon the S.S. Though he claimed throughout his life that Appleton, Wisconsin was his birthplace (and April 6 his birthdate), he was really born in Budapest, Hungary. Houdini was born Erich Weiss on March 24, 1874. The Houdini myth is about to be examined, and truth really is stranger than fiction! His name is synonymous with escapes his ability to get out of seemingly impossible situations- and his knack for publicizing these events- made him a legend in his own time. There is no question that Houdini is the most famous magician in history. Please CLICK HERE before copying this information

To solve the voltage drop problem, you can make the sub panel closer to the appliance or upgrade the panel based on your needed amps. As a result, your appliances and lighting may become less efficient or malfunction. There is a strong possibility of a voltage drop in a circuit line more than 100 feet in length. It is to reduce the resistance that is caused by the longer travel of current and obstacles such as the curving or bending of wires.Īdditionally, using the smallest 40 amp wire gauge of 8 AWG here may result in an insufficient voltage supply. There is no problem using the minimum recommended 40 amp breaker wire size if the circuit line is below 100 feet.īut if the distance is 100 feet or more, it is worth considering using a 6 gauge size wire for a 40 amp breaker. Considering upgrading your circuit breaker and wire is necessary if you need a higher amount of electricity in your circuit. The same method is applied to an even lower amp like 30 amp, or even 15 amp circuit breakers. It is only applicable to use more than 80% up to the maximum capacity of the breaker if the usage is application start-up and does not exceed the breaker’s maximum capacity. This means that if you are using an 8 wire gauge for 40 amp, you are only allowed to use a 32 amps maximum of continuous loads. Anything more than this rule may result in the constant tripping of a circuit breaker due to circuit overloads. 80% NEC RuleĪccording to the NEC, 80% of the circuit breaker’s total capacity is allowable for continued usage (3 hours or longer). It can also help you figure out what circuit breaker is best to use for the different circuits and appliances in your house.Īside from the wire size, there are also many things to consider when installing a new circuit. This video by Starving Electrician will not only help you identify what size of wire is recommended for different circuits. It will result in less resistance in current flow as well as less heat build-up – meaning, you can install a 220v 40 amp wire size of 6 gauge safely and without violating any NEC rules. In contrast, using a larger wire is safer and ideal for many residential houses. This problem is hazardous since it can melt the insulator and cause a short circuit in the line. Using a smaller wire (than stated above) in a 40 amp service may affect the current flow and cause high resistance and heat build-up. The wire size determines the electrical resistance and the sustainable amount of current. Using a larger wire size is suitable for future circuit expansion and adding some high-powered devices. However, some professional electricians prefer to use a 6 gauge wire, and there is nothing wrong with it.

It's a testament to how well Sam Raimi cast his villains and how beloved his Spider-Man movies still are that Spider-Man: No Way Home is importing both the Green Goblin and Doctor Octopus into the MCU. Both actors were perfectly cast and they're both so good and memorable that it's understandable why the MCU hasn't even attempted its own versions of Green Goblin and Doc Ock. Indeed, Willem Dafoe's Green Goblin is rightfully regarded as one of the most iconic villains in superhero movies, and Alfred Molina's Doctor Octopus shares the same high esteem. Since Osborn and Octavius haven't shown up in the MCU, it's also possible that both villains could cross over and become the MCU's Green Goblin and Doctor Octopus as well. Jon Watts' Spider-Man movies set in the MCU purposely avoided repeating villains used in Sam Raimi's Spider-Man trilogy and Marc Webb's The Amazing Spider-Man movies, which makes Tom Holland's Spidey meeting Tobey Maguire's most iconic adversaries a can't-miss event. Willem Dafoe's comeback as the Green Goblin (which is still unconfirmed by Marvel and Sony) and Alfred Molina's return as Doctor Octopus are two of the biggest selling points of Spider-Man: No Way Home. But Dafoe and Molina couldn't have known that both of their classic supervillains would return in another Spider-Man movie almost 20 years later. Molina is beside himself laughing at Dafoe stepping in for him, and the prank goes over like gangbusters. Octavius demonstrates his technology to the press. Black Maria (pronounced "Mariah") Slang term used in the UK, Ireland, and elsewhere the police van used to transport prisoners, also used in the 19th century in the US and France with various suggested etymologies including racehorses or the infamous black, large, fierce Liverpool guesthouse owner, Maria Lea. An alternative origin is that the police are seen as "busybodies", i.e., they ask too many questions and meddle in the affairs of others. Not to be confused with the UK parallel to "chicks", a more modern and now more common use of "birds." Bizzies UK, said to have been coined in Merseyside, as the police were always too "busy" to help citizens who reported low-level crimes such as house burglaries. Benga Czech slang term for police officers. Beat cop inoffensive slang for patrolling officers. Referenced most widely on The Fugees' album The Score and KRS-One's Sound of da Police. A Alphabet Agency/Alphabet Soup/Alphabet Bois Used in the United States to denote the multiple federal agencies that are commonly referred to by their initials such as the FBI, ATF, and DEA. Life, in this way, is often very much like tennis. To put that into a simple example, there’s a story in the book The Inner Game of Tenniswhere author and world-renowned coach, Timothy Gallwey, describes instructing people without actual explanation, only a physical call-and-response, where Tim swings the racket the correct way then the player tries to mirror Tim. Mirror neurons are the mechanism by which we observe and encode and thus improve our behavior in relation to our environment. Whether that’s an infant trying to understand smiling and frowning, a little leaguer emulating the swing of Mike Trout or Francisco Lindor, a new hire trying to get a sense of when everyone else leaves for lunch, the ability to empathize when you see someone else happy or hurt, etc. From the moment we’re born, to the moment we die, we rely on mirror neurons to help us figure out what to do and how to do it. This kind of “monkey see, monkey do” behavior is rooted in a biological mechanic known as “mirror neurons”. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve done that at the gym. Or maybe you literally just, right then and there, watched someone else do their laundry and imitated them. Or maybe they weren’t around so you just thought back to all the times you’d watched other people do laundry. The first time you had to do laundry on your own, you may have had no idea how to do laundry on your own, so you called a parent or sibling or friend or your roommate. We tend to think of role models in life-defining capacities, like “My dad was a firefighter so I decided I’d be a firefighter.” But they can also be for more simple, mundane things. We all know and have hopefully had a role model in our lives. It may seem wild, but this process is essentially what happens in Serenity. To put that into context, though, we need to start outside the plot of Serenity and discuss two things: role models and a movie called The Truman Show. That can be something small, like a friend asking, “Where do you want to go to dinner?” To something larger, like your boss asking, “Honestly, do you think people here respect me?” How we respond in those moments is often a process of elimination, sorting through various potential choices to decide on what we believe, at least in the moment, to be the best. We all encounter situations where we don’t know exactly how best to act, what to say, what the consequences of our actions may be. There’s a thing that happens on the daily-to you, to me, to everyone. So that’s the little secret I’m going to let you in on today. It’s terrible, and I can’t tell you why.”Įven outlets who had a grasp of what was going on often missed the point about why it was going on. The Washington Post‘s article was titled, “Matthew McConaughey and Anne Hathaway’s new movie has a giant plot twist. One headline I saw said it was almost impossible to describe the movie without sounding crazy. Most of the talk is about how bizarre or bad Serenity is. More strangely, he’s also being relentlessly pursued all around town, “Better Off Dead”-style, by a mysterious, deeply ridiculous travelling salesman in a tight-fitting suit (Jeremy Strong).Odds are you haven’t seen many articles discussing how the twist of Serenity is actually grounded in our everyday decision-making practices. He initially turns her down, but he’s tempted by the possibility of leaving the island with its endlessly nosy locals, and he’s also haunted by memories of his son, whom he envisions in gauzy flashbacks while chugging rotgut rum out of a “World’s Greatest Dad” mug. Karen has since married into money via a comically loathsome sadist with underworld connections named Frank (Jason Clarke), and she makes Baker a desperate offer: Take Frank out on a fishing trip during their weekend getaway, ply him with booze and toss him to the sharks, and she’ll pay him $10 million in cash for his trouble.īaker ponders the proposition in between frequent trips to the isle’s lone bar and a few bouts of nude cliff diving. Complications arise when Baker gets a visit from Karen ( Anne Hathaway, vamping it up as a smoky-eyed femme fatale), his childhood sweetheart with whom he once fathered a child. Forks did start to become popular with the wealthy during this time. Most people ate with their hands and maybe a knife. Wine was the most popular in Italy and France, while ale was big in the northern areas like Germany and England. Mostly people drank wine or beer (also called ale). The water during this time would have been dirty and not very good to drink, especially in larger towns. People didn't drink water with meals like we do today. For dessert, which was often called the "Fruit course", there would be fruit, jellies, nuts, and cheese. This was also a time for lots of meat to be eaten such as mutton, chicken, pheasant, venison, rabbit, turkey, and ham. After cleaning and cooking the birds, they would often reattach the feathers for decoration. Often they would eat large game birds like swans, peacocks, or cranes. Roasts would be boiled in a large vat and then basted with juices and rose water to add flavor.Īt weddings, festivals, and large feasts the food could get interesting. They would have large roasts of beef, stag, or pig. Like the peasants, they ate soups and broths, but these soups were spiced with exotic spices and often sweetened with sugar. Like the Greeks and the Romans they studied, they enjoyed having huge feasts with lots of fancy dishes. The wealthy people during the Renaissance ate much better than the peasants. People that lived near the coast would get to eat more fish. Salt was very expensive during the times of the Renaissance. One reason meat was hard to get was that you needed salt to preserve the meat. Peasants didn't get a lot of meat to eat. |
